In the mid-1990s, Matteo Frigo, a graduate student in the research group of computer-science professor Charles Leiserson (whose work was profiled in the previous installment in this series), developed a parallel version of a fast Fourier transform (FFT). One of the most frequently used classes of algorithms in computer science, FFTs are useful for signal processing, image processing, and data compression, among other things.

There is a controversy about the benefit of model-based software development in practice. Reliable and broadly spread research that analyses the status quo of model-based development and its effects on economics is still missing. This article describes the results of a global study by Altran Technologies, the chair of Software and Systems Engineering and the chair of Information Management of the University of Technology in Munich (TUM) which examines the costs and benefits of model-based development of embedded systems in the car industry.
