T-Mobile Makes Google Default Search, Replacing Yahoo

T-Mobile USA has replaced Yahoo with Google as its default search engine on mobile phones, such as BlackBerry smartphones. Yahoo says it will continue to work with T-Mobile, citing the recent partnership on Yahoo Mail and Yahoo Messenger and on content services such as the placement of various Yahoo services on T-Mobile's Web2Go portal. Default search deals significantly improve search engine market share, as users are more likely to carry out searches through the search engine presented by the browser.

Microsoft Will Continue China Strategy in Search, Cloud

Microsoft executives have indicated repeatedly that the company intends to stay in China and compete aggressively for the search and cloud-computing markets, despite some recent controversy in which Google briefly threatened to end its operations in China. Both Microsoft and Google lag behind homegrown Chinese search engine Baidu in that market, considered one of the world's fastest-growing. Google Releases ReMail Code Under Apache 2.0 License

Google is open-sourcing the code for its recently acquired ReMail application, citing strong interest in the mobile search product. Google, which released the code under the Apache 2.0 license, faced some complaints after removing ReMail's iPhone application from Apple's App Store with plans to discontinue it. The open-sourcing of ReMail signals a trend for Google acquisitions when it plans to kill off a product.

Microsoft put heavy emphasis on the cloud this week, with CEO Steve Ballmer announcing during a March 4 discussion at the University of Washington that the company intended to use cloud functionality as the jumping-off point for its future products and services.
