T-Mobile Makes Google Default Search, Replacing Yahoo

T-Mobile USA has replaced Yahoo with Google as its default search engine on mobile phones, such as BlackBerry smartphones. Yahoo says it will continue to work with T-Mobile, citing the recent partnership on Yahoo Mail and Yahoo Messenger and on content services such as the placement of various Yahoo services on T-Mobile's Web2Go portal. Default search deals significantly improve search engine market share, as users are more likely to carry out searches through the search engine presented by the browser.

Microsoft Introduces Barcode-Reader App for Google Android

Microsoft unveiled Microsoft Tag for Google Android, which allows users to scan a customized tag with their smartphone's camera module and receive multimedia and other content on their screen. Although Microsoft is contesting fiercely with Google, Apple and other companies in the smartphone space, it evidently recognizes the opportunities to spread its products to as many users as possible by creating applications for its rivals' mobile app storefronts. Google has also introduced a barcode-scanning system that leverages its own software.

Google Chrome Gets Machine Translation, New Privacy Features

Google has added instant machine translation and new privacy features to the Google Chrome Web browser, as Chrome's growth has reached 5.6 percent through January, according to Net Applications. The new polyglot feature recognizes when the language of a Web page a user is viewing is different from his preferred language setting and displays a prompt asking if the user would like the page translated via Google Translate.
