Wolfram Alpha Releases API Version 2.0
Version 2.0 delivers enhanced features and opens access to all developers with free API for personal use and simplified commercial licenses
CHAMPAIGN, Ill., Jan. 31 -- Wolfram Alpha LLC takes another step toward its goal to make all systematic knowledge immediately computable and accessible to everyone with today's release of the Wolfram|Alpha API 2.0. The latest version includes new features and pricing that allow a wide range of developers to effortlessly integrate the groundbreaking capabilities of the Wolfram|Alpha computational knowledge engine into their websites and mobile, ePublishing, enterprise, and cloud-computing applications.
Since releasing the Wolfram|Alpha API in late 2009, the company has been grooming the API for mass adoption through its relationships with partners such as Bing and Touch Press. "With the launch of Version 2.0 of the Wolfram|Alpha API, we're opening the power of Wolfram|Alpha to all developers, big and small, as we continue our push toward making Wolfram|Alpha the place for facts on the net," said Wolfram|Alpha's Schoeller Porter, architect, Developer Relations.
The Wolfram|Alpha API, which first debuted in October 2009, was swiftly integrated into Microsoft's Bing decision engine, enriching Bing's results in such areas as nutrition, health, and advanced mathematics. "Bing integrates a lot of results from Wolfram|Alpha results on its search pages. One of the big reasons for this success is the simplicity and power of the Wolfram|Alpha API," said Johnson Apacible, principal architect, Microsoft Corporation. "It was simple to learn and use, yet powerful enough to control the API to return the results we need."
In 2010, new ground was broken in the ePublishing world when Wolfram|Alpha's computational knowledge was integrated into Touch Press' The Elements and Solar System ebooks. "Thanks to the Wolfram|Alpha links we've included on every page, we can offer a doorway into a wealth of additional curated knowledge about the object in question, be it Neptune or Neptunium," said John Cromie, chief technology officer, Touch Press. "Building this remarkable capability into our application framework was a breeze with the well-thought-out Wolfram|Alpha API."
The Wolfram|Alpha API 2.0 adds many important features for developers. An example is asynchronous operation, which improves user experience by allowing initial results to be returned ahead of more time-consuming ones. Another feature is the addition of a full Java language client library. In addition to technical features, the Wolfram|Alpha API 2.0 has simplified licensing that makes it free for personal use and allows significantly greater flexibility for commercial deployment.
Since the API's initial release, Wolfram|Alpha has introduced several of its own products that are powered by the Wolfram|Alpha API, including the Wolfram|Alpha Mobile and Tablet Apps for iPhone, iPod touch, iPad, and Android devices; the newly-released Wolfram Course Assistant Apps; and Mathematica 8. This year the company expects to release a number of Wolfram|Alpha API built products that are currently in the development pipeline.
