Imaging device and focal position detection method

(EN)The purpose of the present invention is to achieve high-speed and high-precision phase-difference autofocusing, regardless of the status of the photographic subject. Provided is an imaging device comprising a control means that arranges and forms pupil-divided first and second phase difference detection pixels (x, y) inside a phase difference detection area in a light-receiving surface and drive controls the focus lens position at the front of the imaging element to a focal position based on the phase difference between each detection information for the pixels (x, y). The control means: determines whether the number of divisions for the phase difference detection area should be a first division number (n) (including n=1) or a second division number (m) which is larger than n, based on the status of the photographic subject (e.g., whether wide angle or telephoto, whether in face detection mode, whether in night view mode, etc.); arithmetically finds the correlation between a first information and a second information and calculates a divided area evaluation curve, for each divided area formed by the division of the phase difference detection area into n or m; performs a prescribed arithmetic processing on the divided area evaluation curves for each divided area and finds an overall evaluation curve; and finds from the overall evaluation curve a defocus amount for drive controlling the focus lens to a focal position.
